What are regular holidays?

Generally, there are two types of holidays in the Philippines, namely, regular holidays and special non-working holidays. These are given holidays with set dates when you do not have to check the internet to make sure there is no work. Some examples of this are New Year’s Day and Christmas Day.

However, there are also regular holidays with a set day of the week instead of a specific date like Holy Week. Like the start and end of Holy Week, the dates of these Islamic holidays also change annually as they follow the lunar calendar. During regular holidays, there is no work, and employees are entitled to their full day’s compensation.

How are employees paid during regular holidays?

When the regular holiday falls on an ordinary work day, all workers are to receive their basic daily wage even without coming in to render. However, should they come in for work on a holiday, they are to receive 200% of their daily wage.

Suppose the holiday also falls on a rest day, the working employee is entitled to 260% of their daily wage. But what if an employee works beyond eight hours during a holiday which is also a rest day? In that case, they are entitled to compensation equivalent to 260% multiplied by 130% for every hour worked in excess of the regular eight hours.

What is a special non-working holiday?

Unlike regular holidays, special holidays are more flexible. Furthermore, the “no work, no pay” applies during special non-working holidays, unless there is a company policy that says otherwise. However, employees who do report during a special holiday get a premium equal to 30% of their daily wage.
